What You Should Do (Or Not Do) When a Fire Occurs on Your Stovetop

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

Always have a lid close by that can be placed on a burning pot. Even a cookie sheet that covers the pot will work. If a fire occurs, cover the pot, then turn the stove off. Don't peek! Let it cool completely down.

* Do not pick up a burning pot. Dropped and spilled hot food and burning oil can cause serious and tragic burns.

* Do not put water on a burning pot. This can make things much worse.

* You can use a fire extinguisher but only if you know how to. Did you ever read the instructions? Or look at the manufacturers videos on how to use? You probably should before you ever have to use one. You could make things worse!

If the fire is too big or for whatever reason you are unsure if it can be contained, then get everyone outside and call 911.

Using A Portable Fire Extinguisher

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

red fire extinguisher on brown pipe near window Remember P.A.S.S. to use a portable fire extinguisher properly.

A portable fire extinguisher can be a life and property saving tool when used correctly. In order to operate a fire extinguisher, the NFPA suggests remembering the word PASS.

* Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

* Aim low. Point the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire.

* Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

* Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Read the directions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out. Encourage your family members and co-workers to do the same.

Remember, extinguishers do have their limitations! It is also important to ensure you have the correct type of extinguisher for your home or facility.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591. We are always here to help.

Tips on Self Cleaning Ovens

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

stainless steel oven with stuffed bell peppers inside Always follow proper safety precautions when using a self-cleaning oven.

They work by heating up way hotter than you would normally cook at. This burns away the grease buildup inside the oven. However...

* Read the instructions before using the self cleaning feature.

* If you rarely use or have never used the self cleaning feature and decide to finally try it when the oven is caked in burned-on food and grease, IT CAN CATCH FIRE inside. It will also most certainly create a lot of smoke.

* Ovens are made to completely lock the oven door shut when it is in self-cleaning mode. You can't open the door until it cools down. That's a safety feature.

* If you think there is a problem when it is in self cleaning mode, turn the oven and stove completely off. Call 911 and have everyone go outside to wait for the Fire Department.

What You Should Do to Prevent a Cooking Fire and Burns

6/4/2021 (Permalink)

fireman putting out burning apartment building Prevent cooking fires before they start with these steps

At SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch we believe that prevention is the best way to avoid disaster. The following tips are ways to prevent cooking fires and burns.

* Keep your stove clean. The hood, cabinets, and all surfaces above and near the stove should also be clean and free from grease buildup. That goes for inside the oven too.(When hot enough, grease buildup will melt and burn.)

* Move combustibles away from the stove. No towels, mitts, plastic bags and bottles, or any combustible storage or trash should be near the range.

* If cooking with grease oil, never ever leave cooking unattended. If you see smoke coming off the oil or grease, it can ignite. It does not need a flame to catch fire. Once hot enough, grease and oil will catch fire.

* Don't have loose or draping sleeves on clothes. These can ignite over an open flame.

* Don't let kids run around, play or ever be unattended around the stove. Don't ever assume they know better just because you told them.

* Make sure you have working smoke alarms. To prevent nuisance alarms, keep the smoke alarms at least ten feet away from the stove. Even when positioned correctly, the darn thing mat still go off, usually if you burn some  food. It's supposed to... you're burning something.

It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Not all 4th of July Celebrations are canceled

SAN ANTONIO – Despite a pandemic, not all Fourth of July fireworks celebrations have been canceled in 2020, but masks and hand sanitizer will most likely make appearances at each socially distanced party.

New Braunfels and Schertz officials said they will not host central gatherings but are encouraging people to watch the cities’ fireworks displays from their homes or other locations that make social distancing possible.

In San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is still planning on holding a fireworks display, as the park will reopen on Friday, June 19.

San Antonio’s 4th of July celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park canceled due to COVID-19

Here are the latest plans for fireworks display around San Antonio and New Braunfels for July 4. This list will be updated as plans are added or canceled.

Helotes

Helotes has canceled its celebration that was planned for July 3 at the grounds of City Hall. The city’s website states the festivities typically gather more than 1,000 people.

“Our team remains committed to the health and safety of all residents and visitors. Unfortunately, we do not have enough space at City Hall to accommodate such a large event with the implementation of adequate social distancing measures. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year for the 2021 celebration,” City Administrator Marian Mendoza said.

Leon Valley

The city has canceled its 26th annual Fourth of July events including the annual parade, fireworks, and the Leon Valley Historical Society’s Pioneer Firecracker 5K Morning Run.

New Braunfels

The annual Fourth of July Parade in New Braunfels has been canceled t his year, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the city’s annual fireworks spectacular which will take to the skies over Landa Park as planned.

No 4th of July parade in New Braunfels this year, but here’s how to watch the fireworks

Officials said residents that want to watch the fireworks can do so from these locations:

  • Landa Park
  • Fredericksburg Fields
  • Landa Park Golf Course
  • Fischer Park
  • The parking lots of Oakwood Church and the Westpointe Village shopping center

San Antonio

The annual Fourth of July Celebration and fireworks show at Woodlawn Lake Park has been canceled this year out of an abundance of caution, city officials said Tuesday.

San Antonio’s 4th of July celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park canceled due to COVID-19

The celebration is a city of San Antonio-sanctioned event.

City parks and trails will remain open over the holiday weekend and social distancing is encouraged.

San Marcos

The city’s SummerFest, which includes fireworks and a concert, has been postponed due to the pandemic.

“Staff will continue to discuss and monitor the situation to determine when the celebration can be rescheduled,” the city said in a news release.

The San Marcos River and city parks will remain open during the holiday weekend but city officials encourage visitors to take safety precautions.

Schertz

The city says this year’s celebration “will be like no other in recent years."

Schertz is encouraging families to stay home and picnic in their own backyards, and then find a spot near their houses to watch the fireworks display.

Fireworks will be held at Hilltop Park, Schertz Soccer Complex and Rhine Valley Park and will start around 9:15 p.m.

City leaders and departments will also have a parade throughout neighborhood streets.

More details about time and route will be released at a later time. For more information, click here.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Fiesta Texas, which will reopen on Friday, will have fireworks from July 3-5, according to a park spokesperson.

The fireworks will immediately follow the show “Rock the Night,” which begins at 9:15 p.m.

Dangers of Extreme Cold

Woman walking on snow covered bridge Woman walking on snow covered bridge

San Antonio Texas is not known for cold weather, but it does occur and SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch would like to make you aware of some of the dangers associated with this type of weather.

Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, as well as heart attacks from overexertion, according to Ready.gov. That is why it is important to be aware of the effect of extremely cold temperatures can have on you.

Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms include white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy, numbness.

Hypothermiais when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature caused from long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone's body temperature is below 95°, seek medical attention immediately.

To avoid these conditions, stay indoors, if possible. If not, dress in layers to stay warm and keep dry.

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch hopes that this information was helpful. If you need additional information or you need our services, please call 210-670-9591.

Winter Weather Worries

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

Cold, snowy weather Bus on street with snow falling

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. Sometimes the temperatures do sink below freezing in San Antonio. That is when we are all at risk for frozen pipes, which can create a major disaster to your home or property.

Frozen pipes occur when exposed to cold weather, such as outside faucets and pipes located on exterior walls in kitchen cabinets, or pipes in attics. A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused from the backflow of pressure between the water source and the blockage.

If winter weather causes water damage to your home or property, then call SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591. We are faster to any size disaster. The faster that we can get on site, the less damage you will incur.

Merry Christmas!

12/25/2019 (Permalink)

Nativity scene Nativity scene

Today is the day that christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The story is well known, but in ancient history there was a lot of argument about the true day of the birth of Jesus.

The exchanging of gifts is one of the core aspects of the modern Christmas celebration, making it the most profitable time of year for retailers and businesses throughout the world. On Christmas, people exchange gifts based on the Christian tradition associated with Saint Nicholas,[179] and the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh which were given to the baby Jesus by the Magi.[180][181] The practice of gift giving in the Roman celebration of Saturnalia may have influenced Christian Christian customs, but on the other hand the Christian "core dogma of the Incarnation, however, solidly established the giving and receiving of gifts as the structural principle of that recurrent yet unique event", because it was the Biblical Magi, "together with all their fellow men, who received the gift of God through man's renewed participation in the divine life."[182]

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch hopes that everyone gets to spend quality time with their families today. If you find yourself in need of our services, please call us at 210-670-9591. We are always here to help!

Christmas Decorating Safety Tips

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree Christmas Tree

We all agree that the holiday season is a magical time, but Christmas traditions, decor, and celebrations can lead to accidents or worse if you are not careful. Here's how to keep your family safe and healthy through to the NEW Year.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), tree fires aren't super common, but when they do happen, they are more likely to be serious.

Keep your tree at least 3 feet away from all heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, and heat vents. If you have a real tree, remember to keep it watered. The drier the tree, the more easily it could ignite. Make sure to choose a sturdy stand so that the tree will not tip over.

Check your lights' packaging for the power output and never plug in more than what a power strip outlet says it can handle. Also, never connect more than 3 strings of lights in one series.

Always look for the UL symbol when buying electrical items and pay attention to its color. Green means it's approved for indoor use, and red means it can be used indoors and outdoors. If you are using old lights, check the wires for cracking or fraying. Unplug all indoor lights when you leave the house.

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! If you have any questions, please call us at 210-670-9591

Outdoor Christmas Lighting Safety Tips

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

Christmas lights Christmas lights

Decorating your home for the holidays is fun and exciting, but it is no time to get careless. Each holiday season, hundreds of homes are damaged by faulty electrical wiring. You have to make sure you'r5e as safe as possible and using the best quality equipment you can find.

Avoid using 7 volt light bulbs. They are bigger and brighter, but they also burn much hotter than regular Christmas lights. One of the most common causes of holiday house fires is bulbs such as these being too close to gutters filled with dried out leaves.

Make sure that you only use Christmas lights that are designated for outdoor use. If you use indoor rated lights, they may not be able to withstand the weather conditions, causing them to break down much faster.

Don't use nails, tacks, or metal staples to secure outdoor Christmas lights. Use insulated hooks instead and be sure your lights are strung tightly to avoid damage from the wind.

Only use outdoor rated extension cords.

All plugs should be plugged into a GFCI protected outlet when outside.

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch hoped that these tips have been helpful. We would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas! If you have any questions, please call us at 210-670-9591

Fire Extinguisher Types

11/21/2019 (Permalink)

Yesterday we talked about how to use a portable fire extinguisher. In our discussion we talked about choosing the correct type of fire extinguisher. The following are the different types of fire extinguishers.:

Class A: This is the most common               extinguisher and can be used to put out fires in ordinary combustibles such as cloth, wood, rubber, paper, and many plastics.

* Class B: Used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease.

* Class C: Designed for fires involving appliances, tools, or other equipment electronically energized or plugged in.

* Class D: For use on flammable metals; often specific for the type of metal in question. These are typically found in factories.

* Class K: Intended for use on fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils. or fats on cooking appliances. Generally found in commercial kitchens.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the professionals at SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591. We are always here to help.

Using a Portable Fire Extinguisher

11/20/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Extinguisher Fire extinguisher

A portable fire extinguisher can be a life and property saving tool when used correctly. In order to operate a fire extinguisher, the NFPA suggests remembering the word PASS.

Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

Aim low. Point the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Read the directions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with thembefore a fire breaks out.

Prevent Cooking Fires and Burns

11/14/2019 (Permalink)

Clean stove Clean stove

If you have any questions, call SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591.

Tips on Self Cleaning Ovens

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

What Should You Do If a Fire Occurs in the Oven?

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

* Don't open the door! An oven is made to contain heat.

* Turn off the oven and stove if you can do so safely.

* In most instances a fire in the oven will go out on its own. However, if there is any doubt or worry, get everyone to wait outside and call 911.

Don't take any chances!

What You Should Do (or not do) If a Fire Occurs on the Stove Top?

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

This stove caught on fire and most of the house was affected by heavy smoke damage.

Thanksgiving Cooking Fire Safety

11/7/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch, we know that everyone wants to enjoy a nice meal with friends and family on Thanksgiving Day. These gatherings should not include the Fire Department. Please make fire safety an important part of your holiday.

The #1 cause of all fires year round is cooking.

The #1 cause of all injuries from fires is cooking

FIRES DON'T TAKE HOLIDAYS!

Nationwide, Thanksgiving Day is the day of the year that has the most cooking fires where the Fire Department has to respond. The day before Thanksgiving is the second highest response day.

Most cooking fires stay small. They are confined to the oven, a pot on a stove, the microwave or the toaster oven. But, when a fire is given any chance to spread because the cooking is unattended or combustibles are stored on top of or against the stove, the fire can quickly involve the entire kitchen or house. They have destroyed entire apartment buildings. A fire does not care how much money you have, how big or small your home is or who you are.

FIRES AFFECT EVERYONE!
