Stack of books in small shop Stack of books in small shop.

At SERVPRO® of Alamo Ranch, we encounter hoarding in several different ways. Often we are called for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when we arrive on site. We will then communicate with the insurance company regarding the clients contents coverage, and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored or relocated to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can begin.

Another way we encounter hoarding jobs is through calls from landlords, case workers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one. In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. Sometimes family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well.

Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations. If you have any issues with hoarding, please call SERVPRO® of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591. Here to make it "Like it never even happened."

Hoarding: A Serious Situation

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

Pile of Books Pile of Books

According to the Mayo Clinic "A hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them.A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value occurs." Many people with a hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem.

Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage, such as old newspapers, junk mail, or packaging.

Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats, and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

If you or someone that you know has a hoarding situation, please call SERVPRO® of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591. We are here to help.

Deodorization with Hydroxyl Generator

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch has been doing deodorization on projects for quite some time. Of course, the first step is to remove the source of the odor. We have also used thermal-fogging and ozone along with masking agents. Some of these procedures required the areas to be free of occupants , including plants and animals.

A safe alternative to these other procedures is the use of a Hydroxyl Generator. UVA rays are emitted from a titanium dioxide photocatalytic lamp and pass through a permanent anatase coated super reactor screen forming electron hole pairs that react with water and oxygen in the air to form free electrons and hydroxyl radicals that decompose and eliminate organic and inorganic gases and air pollutants.

It sounds complicated, but it is 100% safe in occupied areas. There is no need to remove people, plants, or animals. One unit will cover a 40,000 cubic foot area.

If you have any Deodorization needs, please call the professionals at SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591

Finding an Odor Source Tip #4

7/12/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch offers Odor Removal and Deodorization services. We have discussed several ways to find an odor source because that is the key to odor removal.

One hidden place to look is possibly in a roof vent. Animals can sometimes get caught and die in the vent. That could very well be causing the odor.

The odor could simply be a trash can overflowing with old food or a sack of potatoes with a couple of potatoes rotten in the bag.

Once you do identify the source of the odor, you can plan to remove the odor. Removing the source is the first step and then you can move on to chemicals, sealers, ozone treatments, hydroxyl generators, or masking agents.

If the task becomes too much for you, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch, 210-670-9591.

Finding an Odor Source Tip #2 & 3

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch offers Odor Removal and Deodorization Services. One of the first rules in odor removal is to find the source of the odor and remove it. In our previous discussion, we discussed following your nose. If that does not work, then we move on to examining the structure a little more closely.

TIP #2

If it is a moldy smell, see if you can find if there is a water intrusion in the home. It could be from a leaking water heater or dishwasher. These leaks sometimes go undetected.

TIP #3

Look in hidden areas. This includes wall cavities, chimneys, and maybe under a shelf in a cluttered pantry closet. If you need deodorization services, please call the professionals at SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591.

Finding an Odor Source Tip #1

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch performs odor removal and deodorization services. Lets talk about how to find an odor source.

Odor removal is one of the most subjective services that SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch offers. Some odors are easily identifiable and then the source can be found and eliminated. The first thing that has to be done is removal of the source of the odor. No amount of deodorization will help without removal of the source of the odor.

As easy as it sounds, you just have to follow your nose to try and find the culprit. Sometimes, when we have a large area affected by fire or water damage, this technique may not be feasible. Stay tuned for some more tips.

Destroy Odors with Deodorization

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch will provide specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. Other odors that may require deodorization are cigarette smoke, pet odors, decomposition, and mold. SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the source of the odor. Once the source is found, SERVPRO's own proprietary line of cleaning products is used to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts and more.

Whenever you require deodorization services, call SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591 to make it "Like it never even happened."

The Importance of Cleaning Dryer Vents

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

According to FEMA, failure to clean home dryers causes 34% of home dryer fires. Home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss and can even cause injury and death.

To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your home or business, have SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch clean your dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup.

Other tips for keeping your dryer vents clean from the National Fire Protection Agency include cleaning the lint filter before and after each load and making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not restricted by snow, a birds nest or other potential obstacles. The outdoor flap should be checked to make sure that it has an operating flap and is not open so as not to let in birds or vermin.

Call SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch at 210-670-9591 to have your dryer vents inspected and cleaned.

Indoor Wellness Episode 2 Air Duct Cleaning

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch would like to remind you to have your air ducts inspected and possibly cleaned.

Because ductwork is hidden, it's easy to forget about, which gives pollutants time to collect and contaminate the air. The first step in determining if air duct cleaning would be beneficial to you is a video inspection of your duct system.

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch will look through your ductwork for dirt, debris, animal waste, mold moisture and other contaminates. This will help determine if you need your air ducts cleaned.

The cleaning process begins with the register covers and continues with the ducts themselves. Trained technicians will run a hose and spinning brush head throughout your duct system and scrub them clean. After that, we'll follow up with an EPA-registered anti microbial mist that inhibits contaminant buildup and leaves a pleasant scent behind.

Indoor Wellness Episode 1 Pollutants

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch would like you to know that your indoor air could be more polluted than outdoor air.

Pollen, dust, mold, and other pollutants can collect in your ductwork and contaminate the air your family breathes everyday.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that air pollution indoors can be five times higher than outdoors-and now considers indoor air pollution one of the top five environmental risks to public health.

Fortunately, there are many ways to get rid of these contaminants:

*Air Duct cleaner

*Regular furnace filter replacement

*Increased ventilation inside the home

We want you to be informed-and to be healthy.
