Handling of Asbestos in Restoration
As we have previously talked about, the use of asbestos in building materials has been reduced significantly in the United States. Although this may be the case, when SERVPRO of Alamo Ranch is called on for a commercial water or fire loss, there are precautions that must be taken to ensure the safety of the employees that work in the building and the workers that are performing the restoration work.
Before any building materials can be disturbed, the building owner must present an asbestos survey on the building, or an asbestos survey must be performed by a licensed professional. If the test is negative, then any needed demolition can proceed. If the test is positive, then a notification has to be given to the Texas Department of State Health Services and all work performed by a licensed Asbestos Contractor.
Many government agencies are involved in regulating asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. There are also many rules that are applicable to the process such as the Texas Asbestos Health Protection Rules and the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants.
This is a very complicated process, but all of these agencies and rules have been put into place to protect the general public and workers in the restoration industry.
